Inherited Words – Solo show at CONNERSMITH – Washington, DC

CONNERSMITH presents an exclusive look at Maria Friberg’s new work, ’Inherited Words’. Created during her stay at Bergmangården, Ingmar Bergman’s estate, this photograph features a vintage book caught in the surf of a seascape. Friberg’s captivating imagery symbolizes tradition and the tension between freedom and confinement.

Friberg employs domestic objects to investigate concepts of masculinity, focusing on how inherited responsibilities influence identity across time. Drawing from classical painting, Friberg works directly with scenes, light, and objects, without digital manipulation – no Photoshop, no Artifical Intelligence.

Critically examining the societal impact of masculine norms, her work reinforces our long-term relationship with nature and prompts reflection on the continuity of values and traditions handed down through generations. It will be shown November-December, 2025. More info here.
